In this exhibition, we can learn how American chairs, handcrafted of wood by humble workmen of earlier times, have become objects that are collected, studied and admired.
The twentieth-century beginnings of modernism saw metals and plastics end the dominance of wood, and while the methods and materials of most chair making have changed, the enthusiasm for innovative design has never waned. Encounter the transparent Ghost Chair and the colorful and whimsical artist-designed chairs, including the “Mermaid Chair,” the “Designated Driver Chair” and the “Sitting Pretty Chair.”
Peter Chillingworth of Scenery Hill, PA, is the curator of the period chairs. Judith Nestel of Columbus is the curator of contemporary chairs and Hal Stevens of Columbus is curator of the artist-designed chairs.
