Made in China
Chinese Decorative Arts from 1650-1900
October 18, 2008 – January 4, 2009
Today's China, with her booming economy and expanding contemporary art market, still evokes a sense of distance, romance and mystery. For 4000 years, a large percentage of her huge population has shown an inherent joy in producing art. Her early rulers were great patrons of the arts – some emperors were artists themselves. This exhibition focuses on Chinese decorative arts created between 1650 and 1900 and includes those made for the local Chinese market and others collected in Europe and America. Auspicious motives, traditional, beliefs, and patterns of daily life can be seen in all these objects.
Discover why Chinese art has had such wide appeal: from the middle class Chinese in the Qing Dynasty to the 18th century European nobility to Chinese scholars and officials and to Americans today.
