The Creative Spirit

The Exuberance and Diversity of Folk Art

October 23, 2010 – January 2, 2011

Charlotte Gordon, Curator

The charm of folk and outsider art is irresistible. Self-taught artists are moved by their own creative spirit and followed their impulses to express deeply felt emotions and ideas.

Mark Chepp, who collected the objects in this exhibition, is interested in works made by untrained artists.  Some of the artists featured in this exhibition have signed their work, some are well known.  But much of this work is anonymous.  These pieces embody the strong feelings of the makers who didn’t necessarily consider them art.

This collection showcases the exuberance and diversity of folk art with examples of face jugs, furniture, paintings, quilts, carvings and more inspired by themes such as religion, politics and daily life.  These are works that moved the collector.  His vision is not generated by the market value of the piece or the reputation of the artist, but based on his personal response to the art.
