In Our Own Image

The Genesis of Photography and the Contemporary Eye

September 9 – December 31, 2017

Visitors will embark on the 170 year journey of experimentation that has taken us from the complex production of photographs on plates of glass or metal to the instant images of digital devices. Photography chronicles our personal lives and records events in pictures capable of altering our view of humanity and the physical world.

From curator Scott Ferris: “Photographs, like mirrors, allow us to view ourselves in real time but in images that can be preserved forever.”  His hope is that visitors will reflect on the imagery in their own lives. The contemporary photographers, curator Arnold Tunstall explains: “Use early techniques and processes to be deliberate in their creations. They are fascinated by the resulting look of landscapes and human forms as well as the chemistry and science involved." Artist Stephen Takacs will recreate a nineteenth century photo studio where he will take large glass plate photos and develop them on site.
