Nancy Miller: An Artist’s Creative Journey
Painting, Sculpture, Assemblage and Digital Animation
April 4 – June 7, 2009
Harry Schneider, Curator
Nancy Miller (b. 1927) is a native of Lancaster, Ohio, and a prolific artist whose career has spanned six decades and two continents. Nancy first exhibited her work publicly at the 1962 Ohio State Fair, and her debut museum show was at the Massillon Museum in Massillon, Ohio. She quickly parlayed her Ohio beginnings into a lasting career that included exhibitions, gallery showings and commissions across the United States and in Italy and Germany.
Nancy’s creations encompass numerous artistic media, including painting, sculpture, assemblage and digital animation. Her dramatic, assemblage altar pieces illustrate the artist’s growing fears for our planet and highlight social, environmental and political themes.
For many, her best known pieces are the cut paper sculptures called Opits that she began constructing in 1968. In addition to a number of her early paintings and several Opits, the exhibition includes examples of Nancy’s computer generated moving paintings and other digital works.
