The Artwork of Nelly Toll
September 15 – December 30, 2018
Nelly Toll was only eight years old when she and her mother went into hiding from Nazis occupying Lwow, Poland in 1943.
For nearly two years, she hid in a small, bare room armed with only a set of watercolors. Imagining a Better World: The Artwork of Nelly Toll features 40 archival prints of her childhood watercolor paintings in which she imagined a world in the midst of tragedy.
After World War ll, Toll immigrated to the United States and pursued formal art training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, received a master’s degree from Rutgers University, and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
