Ohio Art Pottery

Vital Shapes, Expressive Surfaces

Feb. 2 –May 4, 2008

From the Collections of the Zanesville Art Center

Vital Shapes, Expressive Surfaces celebrates the heritage of Ohio Art Pottery in a representative selection of ceramic works from the collections of the Zanesville Art Center (ZAC). Curator Mark Bassett, Ph.D., is the author of Cowan Pottery and the Cleveland School; Introducing Roseville Pottery and Understanding Roseville Pottery. The exhibition demonstrates the range, accomplishment and historical importance of Ohio’s ceramic artists. Experience the wide variety of imaginatively designed and decorative wares created in Zanesville, notably by Weller and Roseville, as well as exquisite examples of hand-painted Rookwood, and innovative works by Ohio studio potters and ceramic sculptors. Among the artists, decorators and designers included are works by Dorothy England, Frank Ferrell, Hester Pillsbury, Frederick Hurten Rhead and Kataro Shirayamadani. Come and learn how Ohio sculpted its way into the homes of thousands.
