OHIO POTTERY
Seven Contemporary Ohio Potters & Traditions of Ohio Pottery
September 27, 2002 - January 5, 2003
The Decorative Arts Center of Ohio presents the work of seven of Ohio’s foremost ceramic artists working in stoneware, earthenware, and porcelain.
This exhibition will portray the range and diversity of work being produced in Ohio today, including pieces by artists working in highly innovative ways to pieces having their roots in traditional ceramics. All are highly individual, both in their artistic intent and craftsmanly execution; a profound knowledge of materials and techniques informs all of their work. All of these artists/artisans make either their entire living, or the bulk of their living with the work of their hands and talent, thus continuing the Ohio ceramic tradition.
A wood-fired clay vessel formed by unknown hands more than two thousand years ago...salt-glazed stoneware with intricate cobalt decoration....hand-molded figures from sewer pipe...Lotus-ware (the finest American porcelain ever made) Rockingham...kitchen china...Rookwood...These and more were produced by Ohioans for generations of Americans who kept the industry flourishing. The Decorative Arts Center invites you to view the magnificent variety and quality of these wares!
