Art quilts, such as those in the contemporary portion of the Pieced Together exhibition, are works of fiber that the artist intended to hang on a wall for viewing. The art quilt movement began in the 1970’s and has strong ties to Athens, Ohio, with the inauguration of the Quilt National exhibition, a bi-annual event dedicated to the art form. Local artist, Nancy Crow, a founding artist of the movement was instrumental in the development of the Quilt National exhibition. Today, her work is recognized internationally at the forefront of contemporary art quilts.  Her work, and that of Katherine Allen, Sue Benner, Lisa Call, Lindsay Ketterer Gates, Amy Lipshie, Donna Rhae Marder, Eleanor McCain, Joan Schulze and Jeanne Williamson is exhibited here to demonstrate the latest techniques, materials and visual approaches being used in the world of contemporary fiber.
