Russel Wright believed that good design was for everyone. Millions of Americans grew up with Wright designs in their homes. Today, collectors across the country buy and trade his designs, although many do not know what influenced his prolific output. Because he pursued his career in New York City before retiring in upstate New York, he is often considered the product of an urban environment.

Wright’s small-town, Midwest upbringing, and his passions for the theater and the theatricality of Asian design have been mentioned in previous commentaries, but they have not been explored as central motivations for his work. By emphasizing these topics, this exhibition will bring Wright in touch with the people and communities that he created for.

Russel Wright: Living with Good Design will offer the first comprehensive exhibition of Russel Wright’s work to be seen in the Midwest.
