Ohio Is My Dwelling Place
Bicentennial Exhibition of Schoolgirl Samplers 1800-1850
May 2 to August 24, 2003
Far more than samplers, Ohio Is My Dwelling Place evokes the life and times of the schoolgirls who so carefully and beautifully embroidered these works of art, such an important part of every young Ohio girl’s education. It is the story of their lives, their families and the teachers who taught them to stitch. The tools and materials they used also accompany their work.
A rare opportunity to see more than 125 documented Ohio samplers, many are from private collections and never before available to the public, many on loan from major institutions including the Smithsonian, Western Reserve Historical Society, Cincinnati Art Museum and Ohio Historical Society.
Guest Curator is Sue Studebaker, widely known for her classes and lectures on American decorative arts, and her newly published book Ohio Is My Dwelling Place, Schoolgirl Embroideries 1800-1850.
The Ohio Is My Dwelling Place exhibit is free of charge, open to the public and runs from May 2 through August 24, 2003. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday 1:00-4:00 p.m.
