Bernadine Puffenberger Stetzel

12/23/2021

Bernadine Puffenberger Stetzel
1927-2016

Tiffin, Seneca County

After a brief stint as a fashion model in New York, Stetzel returned to her hometown of Tiffin. In the 1950s, she discovered the “primitive” paintings of Mary Ann Robertson “Grandma” Moses and began painting in a similar style, choosing her childhood memories as the subject. “I couldn’t get what I wanted to say into words, so I decided to do it in painting and it came out in primitive style.” Stetzel created over 1,000 paintings.
