Leuty McGuffey Manahan
McGuffey, Hardin County
Manahan was born in the small town of McGuffey (named for her relative, William Holmes McGuffey of McGuffey Readers) and lived there until she married and moved to Columbus. While she dabbled in art in her younger days, she had no formal training, and did not take up painting in earnest until her forties. She would ultimately paint more than 80 works—depictions of daily life, in a naïve and humorous way, all rooted in her memory (and typically with an added hint of social satire). While Manahan exhibited her works widely, she refused to sell any of them during her lifetime.
